The concept for the open space design is derived from the architectural idea as well as the building's specific uses. The three courtyards will differ in character and spatial structure. The main principle of "The Smallest Element" refers to scientific subjects and ongoing research. Accordingly "Garden", "Plaza" and "Landscape" are differentiated. Within the garden "The Smallest Elements" are symbolized through different plant species. The sequential design mirrors genetic codes. In order to optimize different uses a central paved area (square) was established connecting indoor and outdoor spaces to become one unified communications-zone. The adjacent area of "Landscape" creates a transition towards the urban structure.
