Hong Kong, 2026
Inspired by the major British horticultural shows, the Hong Kong Flower Show is one of the most significant and long-established events of its kind in East Asia. The town of Hengqin has invited us to take part in this year’s garden competition on its behalf. Once a tranquil fishing village in the Pearl River Delta, Hengqin has developed into a key hub between Hong Kong, Macau and the southern Chinese metropolis of Guangzhou. Our garden explores the mediating role of the Hengqin region, whilst also conveying universal values such as cooperation, exchange and networking.
Taking the form of an artistic miniature, our garden installation recreates the island landscape of the Pearl River Delta. A gently curving circular path connects the various stations and symbolises the fruitful cooperation between the territories as a source of shared prosperity. Each of the three regions features its own botanical highlights: vibrant peach blossoms in the Hengqin area, elegant white magnolias for Macau and bougainvilleas in the Guangdong area. The ground vegetation blends together to form a harmonious whole.
And then there are the fishing nets, hung with sparkling prisms, which span parts of the garden. They embody the garden’s motto: ‘Weaving Dreams’. The nets refer to the region’s millennia-old fishing tradition and simultaneously symbolise the interconnectedness and cooperation between the areas. The sparkling prisms in the nets are an allusion to the glittering products of the local semiconductor industry. Some prisms feature inlays containing traditional Chinese medicinal plants – a subtle reference to the connection between technological development and centuries-old knowledge of natural medicine.
