Installation for the Czech Landscape Festival 2026

The Czech Landscape Festival is an annual event held at changing locations, situated at the intersection of architecture, landscape architecture, art and urban planning. Through temporary installations, exhibitions and interventions, it aims to spark a debate on the quality and future of urban open spaces. We were invited to create a contribution for this year’s edition in Hradec Králové. Under the motto ‘Chill and Play’, our installation takes over a narrow street in the vicinity of several schools and educational institutions. Until autumn, a bright red snake winds its way through Hostivítová Street. Its mission is to test the space and offer two main functions, especially to students and school-children: chill and play.
Chill!
Along the path, resting platforms are placed with a playful arrangement of backrests for various ways of sitting. Alone or in a groups. Facing each other or side by side. Sitting, lying down or something in between. These platforms test what student-oriented furniture might look like.
Play!
Table tennis is a simple game. It can be played by two people or more. Players can move around or stand facing each other. The point is not to win, but to enjoy the game.
Making of
The individual elements of the snake are designed from two basic and inexpensive materials. The structure consists of a spatial framework made of rough, unplaned timber battens. The surfaces are made of exterior-grade plywood resistant to outdoor conditions. A coat of paint unifies the individual elements into the one. The paint is water-based and non-toxic. It washes off over time.
