Lohmuehleninsel, Berlin-Kreuzberg

Over the past few years the southern Lohmühleninsel in Berlin-Kreuzberg has turned into a much used area for leisure and recreation. The relocation of a parking lot in the northern part of the area provided the opportunity to create a multifunctional space for activities of all kind. At the same time components were added in other parts of the area in order to create a connection to the Görlitzer Park and to adapt to the growing usage of this public space.The main idea of the design is the topographic remodeling of the area around the Schlesische Straße. Its guiding theme being the islands in the river, it offers an enticement for all sorts of activities. A stairway connects the compound with the neighboring flood channel and the paths along the water. The overlong bench, the “Blaue Weile”, reveals a view of the connecting point between the “Landwehrkanal” and the Görlitzer Park. The city of Görlitz used to be the destination of the “Schlesische Bahn” which started at this point. The sprayed graphics on the surface of the bench make a reference to this historic connection.
