As part of the development of a new urban quarter, a square covering around 5,000 m² has been created in Mainz’s Neustadt district. The neighbourhood square fulfils a variety of functions: it serves as a place to relax and socialise, acts as a hub for pedestrians and cyclists, and forms an attractive forecourt for the adjacent shops and cafés. It can also be used for markets, events and temporary uses.
The arrangement of the buildings has created two distinct areas. A continuous surface of polished mastic asphalt with light-coloured inlays structures the square as a unifying design element. Integrated within this are planting and play islands that create different qualities of space. Whilst the northern area, with its shrubbery and seating elements, defines a quiet haven, the southern area, with its spacious play area, forms the active focal point of the neighbourhood.
A particular challenge was posed by the extensive substructure beneath the square, comprising an underground car park, as well as the need to ensure access for the fire brigade. Despite these demanding conditions, tree planting was successfully carried out. Climate-resilient tree species such as Celtis australis, Sorbus domestica, Cercis canadensis and Prunus mahaleb were used.
